How Doctors Melt Belly Fat
This cardiologist-proven diet burns flab and helps reverse diabetes
As a preventive cardiologist, Dr. Rob Thompson specializes in treating conditions that lead to heart disease and diabetes. Which was why he was shocked to discover that his blood sugar was sky high. He had diabetes himself. "I was dumbfounded," admits Dr. Thompson. "It's amazing how having a disease changes your perspective on it."

While Dr. Thompson had no problem figuring out what lab tests he needed or which medications to take, he suddenly found himself grappling with a more primal aspect of life: what to eat. And while he understood that decreasing his carbohydrate intake could help him control his blood sugar, he found it far easier to prescribe this approach to his patients than actually do it for himself. So he wondered: Isn't there an easier way than avoiding carbohydrates altogether?

Well, it turns out there is. And this discovery led Dr. Thompson to write the new book, Sugar Blockers. In it, he reveals how he was able to lose 25 pounds and gain control of his blood sugar, while eating better than ever. But it doesn't just work for people with diabetes. It works for everyone. In fact, it'll not only trigger you to lose fat now, but it'll help keep you healthy for the rest of your life.

The secret: Combining the carbohydrate foods you love with foods that contain substances that interfere with the breakdown of carbohydrates into sugar. This prevents dramatic spikes in insulin, a hormone that signals your body to store fat (and is the reason carbs are linked to weight gain). The best part: These "sugar-blockers" are completely natural, and can even be used to make delicious condiments and toppings.

To show how effective his approach is, Dr. Thompson challenged Prevention editors to try Sugar Blockers on a select group of men and women. Our panel of testers didn't count calories, limit fat or sugar, or try to reduce the amount of food that they ate. Actually, they were amazed at how easy it was to fit Dr. Thompson's sugar blockers into their life.

And their results were impressive. In 6 weeks on the plan, Valerie Hayes, 53, lost 18 1/2 pounds and 9 1/4 inches from her waist, chest, hip, thighs, and arms. Linda Frey, 52, lost 17 1/2 pounds and 13 3/4 inches. But it wasn't just their weight that improved. Most of the participants also saw their blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and triglyceride levels come down—including one person who decreased her triglycerides by an incredible 500 points.

"It was gratifying to see these men and women reduce their risk for type 2 diabetes and heart disease, drop pounds, and have energy to spare, all while enjoying some of their favorite foods," says Dr. Thompson.
